First married lesbian couple in India under 24 hour guard

The first ever lesbian to get married in India are under 24 hour protection after 14 threats from relatives and villagers were received by one of the females.

The couple were married earlier this month by a court in Haryana which is a village close to New Delhi.

The village in which the couple got married, Haryana, was the centre of protests from villagers who demanded that local authorities be able to force their own punishments for those who break local laws. Primarily, this includes the killing of those who marry within their own sub-caste which many villagers describe as akin to incest.

In India, homosexual intercourse was a criminal offence until 2009. Although convictions were rare, many Indians are still against same-sex marriages.

This comes in the same month as the US state of New York legalised same-sex marriage under the Marriage Equality Act.
