Figures released by the Office for National Statistics show that more lesbian couples got married in 2010 compared to gay couples. This is the first time more female same-sex couples tied the knot compared to male couples since 2005, when civil partnerships were legalised.
The total number of civil partnerships in the UK in 2010 was 6,385. 3,119 of these were male same-sex unions with the remaining 3,266 lesbian marriages. This is an increase of 1.9% on 2009's figures. The numbers jumped by 21% in Northern Ireland (at 116 same-sex marriages), 1.7% in England and Wales (5,536 marriages) and a decline of 6.6% in Scotland at 465 marriages.
According to the figures, same-sex male partners have an average age of 40.6 years and women have an average age of 38.4 years. This is a decline from the figures for 2009 which was 41.2 years and 38.9 years respectively.
Most same-sex marriages were conducted in the Brighton and Hove Unitary Authority. Brighton is considered by many to be the gay capital of the UK.
