New Yorks gay marriage law splits Americans

Fri, 29 Jul 2011
Almost 2 weeks after gay marriage was legalised in the state of New York, a poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News has shown that New York's Americans are split as to whether the decision to allow gay marriage is a positive one.

Our of a poll of 1,001 adults, 50% of all adults agreed that 'New York gay marriage law is a positive development' whereas 46% believed it to be a negative development.

Less surprisingly, the views of adults differs greatly by political and religious allegiances. Around 66% of adults under 30 believed gay marriage to be a positive development whereas 60% of over 30s gave it the thumbs down. Swinging is less popular in America - however, New York does play host to several exclusive swinging clubs.

It appears church goers have differing opinions, too. Of the adults polled, Catholics who attended church weekly were split at 48% believing it was a positive step, with 48% arguing conversely. However, 66% of those attending church less often than once a week believed it to be a positive development - with 31% saying it was a negative development.

Adults of no particular religion were greatly in favour of gay marriage - with 78% saying it was a positive step.
