The number of divorces in the UK fell to 10.5% in 2009. These figures come from the Office for National Statistics who released marriage and divorce figures for 2010.
In contrast, 1.6% of gay marriages and 3.3% of lesbian marriages were dissolved in the UK.
In 2010, 509 civil partnerships were dissolved across the UK. To dissolve a same-sex union, a couple must have a same-sex partnership recognised at home or abroad for at least 12 months. Alternatively, they can have a registered civil partnership.
Even though this figure is much less than the average divorce rate, the number of divorces in same-sex couples has increased. The number of same-sex relationships dissolved in 2010 stood at 44% more than in 2009 - where 353 partnerships were dissolved.
