According to a 9,000 sexual health clinic patient consultation, older swingers who swap partners are at higher risk of sexually transmitted diseases.
Out of the 9,000 patients consulted by the South Limburg Public Health Service team, the average age of patients was 43 - with 1,080 of these patients declaring themselves as swingers. Patients were screened from 2007 to 2008 at sexual health clinics, also known as GUMs in the UK.
This consultation took place in the Netherlands and was featured in the journal named Sexually Transmitted Infections.
As well as swingers, young people and gay men were at the highest risk of STIs. Interestingly enough, female swingers were exposed to higher infection rates than male swingers.
In addition, 1 in 10 swingers consulted had chlamydia and just under 1 in 20 was infected with gonorrhoea.
Swingers are always advised to play protected.
